WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CAR
The reason I chose this car is because it was just an iconic japanese car that everyone held close.
Granted significantly more people want the R34 than a R32, myself being one of those guys. I decided
that I was going to get one when my wife said that she was going to be deployed to Japan. I told
her that is what car I am going to buy no matter what. As for the car itself I was hunting for a decently
priced GT-R, but back then I could not justify buying one at $14,000 USD (boy did I miss out on good prices)
and as I was searching on my local facebook group in Sasebo GTR page a guy was selling a GTS-t for only
$2,700 with an oil leak and power steering leak. I immediately messaged my wife saying I wanted to get
this car no matter what. She said to wait a week and see if I still wanted it. A week passed an I still did.
So I ended up meeting with the guy as he was getting ready to leave Japan and couldn't take it back with him,
and I bought it off him for the price of $2,700 and still needing repairs. I didn't care I loved the car from
day 1 when he let me test drive it a week before.
WHAT WAS THE MAIN GOAL WHEN THE BUILD STARTED
The main goal at first was to go with a mostly stock build as all the GT-R guys were putting 18's on their
cars and saying that I should do the same. To which I did the opposite and got stock size Buddyclub P1
racing wheels that were wider than stock along with some HKS gen 1 coilovers that had been taken off
a track built car and had 20,000 hard driven km's on them. I later decided that I wanted to go with
some larger wheels after having been driven in one of the GTR guys cars and it felt more planted than
my car. Just my luck a buddy of mine was selling his Garson Riverside 18's for $750 with tires on them.
The wheels were significantly wider than the outside of the car, but I didnt care I loved the wheels.
I ended cutting up the fenders and using fender flares after trying and failing to roll them.
The end result looked phenomenal to me and caught the eyes of many other enthusiasts in Japan.
Then a fateful day came when I was going to get some new rubber for the wheels. As I was going
down the mountain that I lived on, I got maybe 5 minutes from my house when a drunk driver came
around a corner and was halfway in my lane. I decided to put my car into the curb and destroyed
one of my wheels, but the car was perfectly fine other than a broken stud. After that I went
back to my 16's. I also picked up the larger eBay turbo from a friend who
didn't want to put in on his car after thinking it needed a tune for the larger turbo.
I am still on the stock tune with the larger turbo and have been since I installed it in Japan.
After getting it back to the U.S. I got some new rubber put on the Linea Sport Crimson wheels
(which someone gave to me for free) and have been running them ever since.
As I said in the exterior mods section I am working on a custom 3 piece rear
ducktail wing for my car, and that is going to tie in with the wide body that will come after
I get another set of wheels that I am going to have built to spec for the car. I am also going
to build a front air splitter with air dam and canards. The car will also be recieving a V8
transplant in the future to squeeze out more power and get an easier to repair engine
cost wise over the factory RB20DET
DO YOU HAVE A UNIQUE STORY BEHIND THE CAR OR BUILD
I mean there are so many stories that I have for this car I could go on for hours.
The two that I most often like to tell are the time I was driving around Saga
airport with friends leaving a meet and then seeing a huge hump in the road.
I gunned it and launched my car over it catching a second or two of hang time while
my buddies slammed on their brakes (they were mad at me, but also impressed).
The other story being the time I was at an open drift event in the rain at
a ski resort Tenzan that uses it's parking lot as a drift "track" during the
summer. The rain was lasting all day and I had made a couple of passes. I had
decided that I was done for the day as the asphalt was starting to break apart in
spots in the middle of the track. My australian buddy asked if I could take him
out on a run and I agreed that I would. On the first half everything was going smoothly
as normal, until I got to about the halfway point. The water was so dense on the ground
that pot holes looked like asphalt. I was going sideways through the corner when all of
a sudden there was a huge slam sound from my rear tire along with the car shaking.
I shrugged it off as no big deal and kept going. As I approached the next corner
the car started crab walking hard to the left before I even started trying to drift.
I immediately exited the course and drove to my spot in the pit. I reversed the
car slightly over the drain hole and saw I had completely bent my right rear
lower control arm about 90 degrees causing it to toe out and positive
camber. I had an hour and a half drive home in the rain on slick roads
with a car that at any point the road got too slick the car would
violently shift the rear wheels to the left even when driving straight.
The car made it home safely and was repaired about a week later after
my Nismo lower control arms came in. Would I do it again? Yes absolutely.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR THE CAR
Future plans would be to finish up the body work and get everything dialed in before
going off for paint. I want the car to be show quality but also a daily driver
as it has been for the last 5 years I have owned it. I haven't decided on air
suspension or if I want coilovers with the air cup kit for ride height adjustment.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY IF YOU COULD GO BACK
If I could go back and do anything differently I might have just gone with 18's
on my car and paid for better suspension right off the bat instead of buying
used parts.
